Background


Albert (Al) Shumaker was born in Jasper, Alabama, where he attended public schools. While completing his high school education, Mr. Shumaker held leadership positions in Key Club, Boy Scouts, church organizations, and was president of his senior class; he also taught swimming lessons at the Jasper city park for several summers. Al is the son of Albert and Hazel Shumaker.

Professional History


Al Shumaker was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1965. He then began his practice with Burns, Carr, and Shumaker in Gadsden and Centre, and he continued to practice with the firm for 25 years. Mr. Shumaker is now the lead attorney at his own firm, Shumaker & Associates. Al currently serves as the attorney for the Northeast Alabama Water, Sewer, and Fire Protection District (a multi-county utilities project). He serves as the attorney for the Cherokee County Department of Human Resources and as a part-time municipal judge for Fort Payne, Alabama. Mr. Shumaker has sat on the Farmers & Merchants Bank board of directors since 1983.

Mr. Shumaker is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court, Supreme Court of Alabama, and United States District Courts, and he is a member of the American, Alabama, and Cherokee County Bar Associations.


Current Community Involvement


Mr. Shumaker has held leadership positions in the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in the development of industries within Cherokee County. He is currently an acting member and director of the Centre Rotary Club and has served as President of the Centre Lions Club. Mr. Shumaker is a trustee and youth director at Centre First Baptist Church and provides legal assistance to community civic, environmental, and church groups. Al is a frequent guest speaker for various organizations.
